(Minority Charge Carriers).

DESCRIPTION

A P–N junction diode conducts current in only one direction. The V–I characteristics of the diode represent the relationship between the voltage across the diode and the current flowing through it. When the external voltage is zero, the circuit is open, and the potential barrier prevents current from flowing. Therefore, the circuit current is zero.

When the P-type (anode) is connected to the positive (+ve) terminal and the N-type (cathode) is connected to the negative (−ve) terminal of the supply voltage, the diode is said to be forward biased. In this condition, the potential barrier is reduced. At a certain forward voltage, the potential barrier is eliminated, allowing current to flow through the diode and the circuit. The diode is then in the ON state, and the current increases as the forward voltage increases.

When the N-type (cathode) is connected to the positive (+ve) terminal and the P-type (anode) is connected to the negative (−ve) terminal of the supply voltage, the diode is reverse biased. In this condition, the potential barrier across the junction increases, causing the junction resistance to become very high. As a result, only a very small current, called the reverse saturation current, flows through the circuit. The diode is then in the OFF state. This reverse current is due to the presence of minority charge carriers.
